Course Instructor
Trish (Patricia) Broderick, PhD, is a research associate at the Bennett Pierce Prevention Research Center for the Promotion of Human Development at Penn State University and Professor Emerita and founder of the Stress Reduction Center at West Chester University of Pennsylvania. A graduate of the mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) advanced practicum at the Center for Mindfulness at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, Broderick is a licensed clinical psychologist as well as a certified school psychologist and counselor for grades K through 12. She is the author of numerous research articles and books, including Learning to BREATHE: A Mindfulness Curriculum for Adolescents (2nd ed., 2021, New Harbinger), Mindfulness in the Secondary Classroom (2019, Norton) and the co-author of a developmental psychology textbook for graduate-level students and mental health professionals, The Life Span: Human Development for Helping Professionals, (6th ed., 2024, Pearson Education). Learning to BREATHE has been published in Spanish (Aprende a Respirar, 2023) and Chinese.
.
Broderick holds a master’s degree in school and community mental health counseling from Villanova University and a Ph.D. in school psychology from Temple University. She also has a certification in cognitive-behavioral therapy. Her program of research and clinical work has focused on cultivating emotion regulation and reducing emotional and behavioral problems in adolescents and emerging adults through her mindfulness-based intervention, Learning to BREATHE (L2B). Researchers from SAMHSA (U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration) recently cited L2B as one of only three youth mindfulness programs, out of 41 programs reviewed, for its high level of effectiveness (Marshall et al, 2024).
.
Broderick has developed a teacher training program for L2B facilitators, offered both in the U.S. and abroad, as well as a master trainer sequence that includes coaching and in-depth supervision. In the process of program refinement, she created a standardized rating scale to assess ongoing fidelity and competence in intervention delivery and has developed an asynchronous online course that provides foundation training in L2B. Currently, work is underway to address which teacher preparation components enhance program delivery and student outcomes. Various parent materials and offerings are also in development and are designed as resources for parents who wish to foster mindfulness practices at home for themselves and with their children.
