2. Practicing and Moving Forward: Mindful Quilt 172
Constructing a Mindful Quilt is the capstone activity of the program.
Teachers should invite students to think about several questions which can be posted or written on a board. Student consider each of the following:
What did I learn in this program?
What is the most important message for me?
How will I use what I learned in my life?
Art paper, markers or crayons are needed and some students may need to share materials. However, this activity is best done in silence, perhaps with some appropriate music in the background.
Students can choose a spot to work somewhere in the room, perhaps even sitting on the floor if that works for the group. They work on a visual image that responds to one or more of the question. The drawing can be an image, a symbol, or even some illustrated words. Their picture will become part of a larger collection The drawings can be assembled later as a “quilt” and placed on a wall in the classroom or somewhere in the school.
