Changes in Emotional Reactivity 37

Recall the slide about the body’s response to stress. When we are feeling stressed, it’s because the body registers it as a threat. Emotions play a big part in this because feeling threatened is associated with negative mood states. Often, we try to cope with stress in ways that are not helpful (by drinking, avoiding, getting angry, overthinking, etc.). The more we try to get rid of the stress, the more we reduce our capacity for resilience. This reduces our tolerance of stress, unpleasant or distressing experiences, even if they are temporary.
