Distress Intolerance 39
The ups and downs of everyone’s life can throw us off our game at times and make emotional balance seem like an unreachable goal. This is not uncommon. However, research has found that low distress tolerance as a trait or style of being in the world is a risk factor for a whole range of mental health problems This risk cuts across a number of diagnoses and is therefore considered a transdiagnostic risk factor. Especially for young people, whose emotion management skills are in development, learning how to manage distress is beneficial.
