Exploring Feelings (Emotions) 117
The exploration of emotions continues with psychoeducational activities and discussion about feelings by making the following points:
- Emotions help us communicate;
- They help us know when we should approach something or when we might be in danger;
- They are universal, because we all have feelings.
- Different people can feel the same or different emotions in the same circumstance.
For adolescents who might feel isolated or alone, the ‘Line Up’ can be a normalizing activity.
Students cross a line or raise their hands if they have ever experienced a specific emotion. The list of emotions is long, and the fact that many students ‘own up’ to feeling things that may be unpleasant can be reassuring to the group.
Another activity, ‘How Does It Feel’ is like ‘The Big Event’ from the R theme.
This activity demonstrated that everyone has emotions, but that the emotions may differ, even in the same circumstance, depending upon an individual’s perception. Here we continue to make connections between perception and stress.
