Let’s Practice 165
Let’s begin this last segment with a mindfulness practice called the breathing space. The breathing space practice provides a way to step out of automatic pilot or stress mode and reconnect with the present moment. It can be done in 3 minutes, in 1 minute, or in any amount of time. So first, if it’s comfortable for you. Allowing your eyes to close or your gaze to soften. And bringing your attention to your body. Noticing sensations there. Sensations of heaviness, lightness. Temperature. Breath rate, heart rate. Or perhaps no sensations at all. Next begin to notice thoughts. Is your mind calm? Our thoughts racing. What’s the quality of your thought right now? And then bringing attention to your feelings or your mood state. What is it like for you in this moment? Do you notice peacefulness? Anxiety. Joy. Sadness. Restlessness. Calmness. Do the best you can to acknowledge and register your experience, even if the experience is unwanted. And now gently drawing your attention to your breathing. To each in breath and each out breath. As the breath comes and goes, one breath after the other. And when your attention is pulled away, notice that, and gently bringing the attention back to the breath. No matter how many times this happens. And now letting the field of your awareness expand beyond the breath. Bringing the whole body into awareness. And noticing the sensations as you sit or stand or lie here. Noting any thinking or feelings. Just check in with your experience. How is it for you right now? Can you meet it gently? With kindness. And with curiosity. And when you’re ready, opening your eyes if they’ve been closed. And allowing your attention to return mindfully to this work.
