L2B Session Structure 60

No matter how many lessons a teacher devotes to a theme, for example the B theme, each lesson should have the same structure so students know what to expect and begin to settle into the regularity of the classes

Each lesson has a similar organization:
1: Intro and short practice
2: Activities and discussion that illustrate the lesson theme
3: A Final longer practice (and an invitation to home practice)

The last practices of each theme are considered formal practices, and they are taught in many mindfulness classes and settings. There are also ‘informal’ practices which are discussed in the program. These are done on the spot. You don’t need to sit down in a special way, or close your eyes, for example, to be mindful in the midst of a difficult interaction or to appreciate the beauty of a natural setting that you encounter.

L2B is taught using a ‘guided discovery’ pedagogy. Teachers doesn’t ‘tell’ the students about mindfulness as much as they create the conditions for students to understand mindfulness and to practice it themselves over the course of the sessions. Teacher embodiment of mindfulness is important here, and we’ll talk more about this a later.

If you had 45 or 50 minutes to teach a lesson, Segment 1 might take about 10 minutes; Segment 2 about 20-25 minutes; and Segment 3 about 15 minutes. Note that the last segment of formal practice is critical, because that me be the only practice students do. Therefore, try not to cut this segment short.
