Practicing Emotions in L2B: Acceptance, Gratitude, Kindness and Compassion 157
In concert with the basic foundational attitudes, we focus specifically on developing compassion both for self and others; Tender compassion is more closely identified with practices like loving kindness and self-compassion. Fierce compassion is more closely identified with taking some action to benefit others and reduce their suffering.
While no one would argue that having a healthy sense of self-esteem is important, this is not a primary focus of L2B.
Intentionally focusing on oneself and trying to elevate one’s self esteem can have some unintended side effects because they can be accompanied by social comparison, or comparing oneself to others. Who is held in higher or lower esteem? Me or someone else? Such Social comparison can increase anxiety and self-judgment, which degrade the acceptance of self we are trying to enhance through mindfulness and compassion practices.
