In the first segment of the B lesson, the teacher sets the stage. All the scripts for teacher guidance are included in the manual. It’s important to say a word about the scripts because those interested in presenting the program with fidelity should be mindful of how this applies to implementation. Program fidelity means maintaining the orientation, structure, and essential messages of L2B without removing or adding elements. Beginning teachers in particular should rely on the detailed lesson scripts, so don’t be afraid to use them. They are provided in italics throughout the curriculum. Some teachers find that highlighting the scripts or marking them in other ways can be helpful, especially in the beginning. Sometimes it’s very easy to fall back on doing most of the talking unless you follow the scripts carefully.

Having emphasized the importance of a nurturing and safe context, it’s equally important to establish guidelines for groups. Students in schools are familiar with this, and guidelines help foster a context for learning. Class guidelines should be developed by the participants themselves, who often do a great job of articulating key dimensions of a safe environment like mutual respect and cooperation. Discussing and agreeing on core guidelines at the beginning of the program is an investment that is well worth the time it takes.

Included in the manual are several suggested ways for taking a trauma-informed approach to this introduction to the program. Teachers should incorporate these suggestions as needed to help students in the group.
