Trauma-Informed Adaptations 67
Several structural aspects of L2B are protective for students with trauma histories.
First, the program provides a clear structure for sessions and includes informative psycho-educational information that applies to all participants. Repeated emphasis on the common experience of stress and unpleasant experience occurs throughout the program sessions. As mentioned earlier, teachers need to provide a space for this program that is safe and as quiet as possible. All mindfulness practice periods are short and teachers guide them throughout. The first period of silence during practice is short and occurs later in the program after students have been practicing for a while. Along with stressing the common human experience of stress, compassion for self and others and acceptance of one’s experience is repeated frequently. Formal compassion practices are part of each theme. For participants who may need alternatives, several accommodations are provided for teachers in the manual.
