Trish is the developer of L2B, a licensed clinical psychologist, certified school psychologist (K-12), certified school counselor (K-12) and a graduate of the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction advanced practicum at the Center for Mindfulness at UMASS. Trish offers 3-day L2B workshops, consultation and supervision for certified trainers. More information is available in the “program developer” page.

Lauren is a child clinical psychologist who specializes in adolescent integrative health. Dr. Shomaker is an Associate Professor in the Department of Human Development & Family Studies at Colorado State University and the Department of Community & Behavioral Health at the Colorado School of Public Health. She also is Medical Staff at Children’s Hospital Colorado and a Clinical Professor in Pediatric Endocrinology at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. Dr. Shomaker has been conducting basic science and intervention research on mindfulness in adolescents since 2013. She focuses on the role and potential benefits of mindfulness training, including the Learning to BREATHE program, for adolescents who may be at risk for depression, obesity, and cardiometabolic disease. Dr. Shomaker is interested in understanding the mechanisms that underlie the distinctive benefits of mindfulness training, relative to other psychotherapeutic approaches, and also seeks to develop feasible and acceptable mindfulness-based interventions for underserved and diverse communities of adolescents and their families. L2B Trainer Certification is pending.

Rachel is a licensed clinical social worker and is a Qualified Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction instructor, trained through the Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care, & Society at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. Her career has been devoted to working with children, adolescents, and families. She loves sharing mindfulness with schools and the community as part of the Prevention & Education services available through Davis Behavioral Health at the Davis Mindfulness Center.

Mindfulness Teacher and L2B Workshop Organizer

Katherine is a qualified teacher of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), trained at the Center for Mindfulness at UMass Medical School. She is a member of the steering committee of the Mindfulness Meditation New York Teachers Collaborative. Katherine has worked with L2B since 2014. She offers mindfulness training for teachers in schools and other organizations to prepare them for the Learning to BREATHE workshops. She also organizes Foundation and L2B Intensive Training Workshops in the New York area.

Rachel Lucas-Thompson, Ph.D.

Rachel is an Associate Professor of Human Development & Family Studies & the Colorado School of Public Health at Colorado State University. She studies family relationships, stress, and mental health in adolescence, and currently has a K01 from the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health to study mindfulness interventions in adolescence (particularly for teens from stressful homes). Dr. Lucas-Thompson is the head of the collaborative team (including Drs. Broderick and Coatsworth) to develop, refine, and test a technological supplement to Learning to BREATHE.  Rachel is a certified L2B trainer.

Brenda Nelson, DSW, LCSW

Brenda Nelson, DSW, LCSW

Certified L2B Trainer

Brenda is a certified school social worker at a Chicago suburban high school in the role of Prevention & Wellness Program Coordinator.  She has worked on a variety of multi-disciplinary teams in schools for 18 years.  Prior to school positions, she worked in hospital mental health and crisis intervention for 12 years.  Brenda’s interest in universal prevention work sharpened following a teen suicide cluster at a school where she served as a direct practice social worker.  It was during this exploration that she learned about L2B and began exploring mindfulness, both personally and professionally.  Brenda has served as a L2B teacher since 2013 and trainer since 2016.  She has presented about mindfulness with adolescents to professionals and parents both locally (Chicago area) and nationally.  Originally from Oregon, Brenda attended the University of Oregon and Wheaton College (Illinois) in her undergraduate years.  She earned her Master’s of Social Work from Loyola University Chicago, her School Leadership certification from DePaul University, and her Doctor of Social Work from George Williams College/Aurora University. L2B Trainer Certification is pending.

Anna Smyth, MS

Anna Smyth, MS

Certified L2B Trainer

Anna is a community health educator and mindfulness teacher. She trains organizations and individuals ages 12 to 99 in mindfulness interventions that improve physical, mental and social health outcomes. She holds a Master’s degree in Health Promotion and Education and is a Registered Yoga Teacher. She has been trained as a Qualified Instructor of Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction (MBSR) through UMass Medical School and a Circle of Security Parenting instructor through Circle of Security International. Anna has been practicing mindfulness for over 15 years including several 10-day silent meditation retreats. Her practice has been her key support in navigating two decades of chronic pain, a complex PTSD diagnosis and the daily stressors of life and parenthood during a pandemic.
